Who it’s for

This course is for any employee who needs a working understanding of fire safety in the workplace — what causes fires, how to prevent them, what to do when an alarm sounds and how to evacuate safely. It is suitable for general staff in any sector and complements Fire Warden training for those with a designated role.

There are no formal prerequisites.

What you’ll learn

• How fire behaves and spreads
• Fire safety legislation and the responsibilities of employers and employees
• Identifying fire hazards in the workplace
• What to do when a fire alarm sounds
• Evacuation procedures, routes and assembly points
• How to use a fire extinguisher safely
• How to contact the emergency services

Duration

Online self-paced: approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on the learner’s pace.

Instructor-led on-site or live online: approximately 2 hours, allowing time for discussion, workplace-specific examples and questions. Where practical extinguisher demonstration or site-specific evacuation procedures are included, the session may be extended.

Format

Online: learners complete the course individually through the online platform at their own pace — no fixed session or group size.

Instructor-led: delivered on-site at your workplace or as a live online group session, with a UFAS instructor. Up to 12 learners per session; larger groups by prior arrangement.

Certification & renewal

On successful completion, participants receive a UFAS Fire Safety Awareness Certificate, valid for 2 years.

UFAS recommends refresher training before expiry, and sooner where there are changes to workplace fire procedures, evacuation arrangements, building layout, fire risk or staff responsibilities, or following a fire drill, incident or audit finding.

The certificate is a UFAS certificate — this course is not QQI-accredited or recognised by an external body. It is designed to support employers in meeting their workplace fire safety training responsibilities.

Nationwide, online and on-site

The online course is available immediately on booking and suits organisations with dispersed teams or high staff turnover. Instructor-led training brings added value through discussion, scenario work and practical demonstration — and can be tailored to your building and procedures.
