Who it’s for

The BLS Provider course is designed for healthcare professionals working in in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. This includes physicians, medical students, general practitioners, nurses and nurse managers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, dentists, respiratory therapists, cardiac technicians, cardiac rehabilitation staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nursing students, care assistants and other allied healthcare personnel.

There are no formal prerequisites. Participants should be physically able to perform chest compressions on a manikin while kneeling.

What you’ll learn

• Principles of high-quality CPR
• The AHA Chain of Survival
• One-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR and AED use for adults, children and infants
• Bag-mask techniques for adults, children and infants
• Rescue breathing for adults, children and infants
• Relief of choking for adults, children and infants
• CPR procedures involving advanced airway techniques

Duration & assessment

The course typically takes 3–5 hours, depending on the number of participants. Assessment includes a practical scenario and a written paper of 25 multiple-choice questions.

Format

Instructor-led. A blended learning option is also available for this course. Course materials are approved by the IHF and AHA.

Certification

On successful completion — including any required course components — participants receive an IHF/AHA BLS Provider course completion card, valid for 2 years.

To renew your qualification, the full course must be retaken before the two-year validity period expires.
