Who it’s for

This course is designed for qualified first aiders, emergency first aiders, dental practitioners and dental care professionals, nurses, healthcare professionals and individuals working in clinical or care environments where supplemental oxygen is readily available.

All participants must be at least 16 years old. There are no other formal prerequisites, though a background in first aid or healthcare is expected.

What you’ll learn

• The benefits of oxygen therapy and when it is indicated
• Contraindications and cautions for the use of supplemental oxygen
• Risks associated with compressed gas and safe handling procedures
• Health and safety protocols for use, storage and handling of oxygen
• Operational checks and preparing oxygen therapy equipment for use
• Administering oxygen using appropriate flow rates
• Delivery devices including non-rebreather mask and bag-valve-mask
• Administering oxygen to patients in line with established guidelines

Duration & assessment

Approximately half a day (3–4 hours). Assessment includes practical demonstrations and both open-answer and multiple-choice questioning. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended throughout the two-year certification period.

Format

Instructor-led, combining theory and practical sessions. The course can be delivered on-site at your premises, subject to a pre-course assessment of your facilities.

Certification

On successful completion, participants receive a UFAS Oxygen Therapy Administration certificate, valid for 2 years. To renew, the full course must be retaken. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended.
