What is Cardiac First Response Advanced?

The course is aimed particularly at people working in emergency medical services, fire and rescue services, and healthcare professionals working in healthcare facilities or in the community.

It builds on Cardiac First Response Community training with additional practical skills in airway management, ventilation, oxygen administration, two-person resuscitation and post-resuscitation care.

CFR Advanced is also a pre- or co-requisite for entry to PHECC Emergency First Response, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic courses.

Who is CFR Advanced for?

This is an advanced course and is not necessarily the right level of cardiac response training for everyone.

It is particularly suited to:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Emergency medical services personnel
  • Fire and rescue personnel
  • People progressing towards PHECC Emergency First Response training
  • People progressing towards EMT or Paramedic training
  • Others whose role requires CFR Advanced-level skills

If you simply want to learn CPR and how to use a defibrillator, Cardiac First Response Community may be the more appropriate course.

What you will learn

CFR Advanced takes the core resuscitation skills taught at CFR Community level and develops them further.

Training includes:

  • Patient assessment
  • CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Two-person CPR
  • Use of face mask devices
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use
  • Recovery / safe airway position
  • Management of airway obstruction in adults, children and infants
  • Aspirin administration for suspected heart attack
  • Recognition of stroke
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Suction devices
  • Oropharyngeal airways (OPA)
  • Bag valve mask ventilation (BVM)
  • Advanced airway management using non-inflatable supraglottic airway (SGA) devices
  • Pulse checks
  • Post-resuscitation care

Practical skills matter

CFR Advanced includes skills that need to be performed correctly and maintained through practice, particularly bag valve mask ventilation and advanced airway techniques.

For that reason, choosing the highest available level is not necessarily the objective. The right course is the level at which you need the skills and can maintain competence in them.

If you are unsure whether CFR Community or CFR Advanced is appropriate for you or your organisation, talk to UFAS before booking. We will help you choose the right level.

Certification

On successful completion of the course, participants receive a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) Cardiac First Response Advanced certificate, valid for two years.
