Why this training matters

Abrasive wheels are widely used in construction, engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, metalwork and facilities environments. Incorrect selection, mounting, inspection or use can lead to serious injury — including wheel breakage, cuts, eye injuries and contact with moving parts.

Under Irish workplace safety legislation, including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, employers must ensure that employees who use work equipment are provided with appropriate information, instruction and training. Abrasive wheels are specifically addressed under this legislation.

Who it’s for

This course is suitable for employees, contractors, maintenance staff, construction workers, workshop operatives, supervisors and anyone who uses or supervises the use of abrasive wheel equipment — including angle grinders, bench grinders, cut-off saws and con-saws.

What you’ll learn

  • Hazards and risks associated with abrasive wheel use, and necessary precautions
  • How to mark abrasive wheels correctly: type, size and maximum operating speed
  • Safe storage, handling and transportation of abrasive wheels
  • The function of components: flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts and guards
  • Correct assembly and balancing of abrasive wheels
  • Dressing abrasive wheels using the correct method
  • Adjustment of work rests where applicable
  • Selection and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Duration & assessment

Approximately 3–4 hours (half day). The course includes both theory and practical assessment. Each learner receives a training book for future reference.

Format

Instructor-led, on-site at your workplace. An online awareness option is also available — please note that online awareness training provides general awareness only. Learners who are required to select, inspect, mount or operate abrasive wheels must complete the full practical instruction and assessment.

Certification & renewal

On successful completion of the instructor-led course, participants receive a UFAS Abrasive Wheels Certificate, valid for 3 years.

Refresher training is recommended before expiry, or sooner where equipment, work practices, risk levels, legislation, workplace procedures or job responsibilities change.

The certificate is a UFAS certificate — this course is not SOLAS or HSA accredited. It is designed to support employers in meeting their Irish workplace safety training obligations.
