Who it’s for

This course is for employees designated as fire wardens or fire marshals in any workplace, and for anyone who may be required to take a lead role in fire prevention or evacuation. It supports employers in meeting their obligations under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Fire Services Act 1981.

There are no formal prerequisites for this course.

What you’ll learn

  • Fire warden responsibilities and the legal framework
  • How fire behaves and spreads
  • Fire prevention strategies and fostering a prevention culture
  • Evacuation procedures and assembly point management
  • Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)
  • Fire drills, record keeping and post-incident reporting
  • Safe use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets
  • Practical exercises: building evacuation and hands-on extinguisher and fire blanket handling

Duration & assessment

The course takes approximately 4 hours. Training is practical and interactive throughout, covering both theory and hands-on exercises. No real fire is used during the practical elements. Each participant receives a Fire Safety Booklet to support their learning.

Format

On-site at your workplace, delivered by a UFAS instructor. Training in your own building means your wardens practise your actual evacuation procedures, routes and equipment.

Certification & renewal

On successful completion, participants receive a UFAS Fire Warden Certificate, valid for 2 years.

UFAS recommends renewal before expiry, and sooner where there are significant changes to the workplace, fire procedures, evacuation arrangements, building layout, staff responsibilities or following a fire drill, incident or audit finding.

The certificate is a UFAS certificate — this course is not QQI or IOSH accredited. It is designed to support employers in meeting their workplace fire safety training duties under Irish legislation.
